What is AEO? What is Answer Engine Optimisation for UK Business?
AEO Gets You Cited.
We discussed the issue in our recent article about Google AI Overviews stealing your traffic: AI tools are answering users' questions directly in the search results, and not sending them to your website. Rankings are holding, but organic traffic is dropping.
This article is the answer part of that conversation.
The answer to the AI-first search landscape is called Answer Engine Optimisation — AEO. It is one of the fastest growing disciplines in digital marketing, yet most UK businesses have never heard of it let alone implemented it. That gap is the problem and the opportunity.
What is AEO – Answer Engine Optimisation?
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the process of structuring your content so that artificial intelligence (AI) tools — including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot — select your website as the source they cite to answer users' questions.
Traditional SEO is optimising for the click. Your page one ranking, the user sees your listing, they click through to your site. AEO is optimised for the citation. The AI responds with your brand name and website as the authoritative source, and the user associates your business with expertise, whether they click through or not.
AEO makes your content so clear, authoritative and well-structured that artificial intelligence systems just have to use it as their primary source.
AI Overview prevalence has roughly doubled year-on-year from 13.14% of Google queries in March 2025 to 25.11% in early 2026. ChatGPT Search is now answering an estimated 250 to 500 million search intent queries per week, while Perplexity has crossed over 100 million monthly active users.
Now, 25% of the Google searches your potential customers do have a synthesised AI answer at the top of the page before any organic results. If your business isn't being cited in those answers, you're not just missing clicks – you're missing the moment that a buyer is forming their view of who the experts are.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO – What are the Differences?
| Term | Optimises for | Primary objective | Still needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO Search Engine Optimisation |
Classic Search Rankings | Website clicks | Yes — the foundation that everything else is built on |
| AEO Answer Engine Optimisation |
Being cited as the source in AI generated answers | Citations, brand authority, and qualified traffic | Yes – increasingly indispensable |
| GEO Generative Engine Optimisation |
Higher visibility in generative AI outputs — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini | AI-powered share of recommendations & brand mentions | Emerging — still needed, good for brand level visibility |
AEO doesn't replace SEO, it is built on SEO. Before artificial intelligence systems can quote your content, search engines need to crawl, index and trust it. SEO built discovery foundation. AEO gives the structure and clarity that artificial intelligence systems need to pull and cite your answers. If your technical SEO is broken – slow site, crawl errors, thin content – no amount of AEO work will fix the issue.
The Data Behind the AEO Urgency
In most cases, the web pages that Google ranks in its top 10 do not match the web pages that artificial intelligence systems reference in their responses. If you rank well in traditional search, it doesn't mean you're being cited in AI answers. These are two distinct visibility games and right now most UK businesses are only playing one of them.
"Being highly ranked in traditional search is not the same as being cited by AI tools. Only 8% of ChatGPT's cited sources are in Google's top 10. You can be number one and still be invisible in AI search."
— Inflix Digital Strategy TeamHow Do Artificial Intelligence Systems Determine What to Cite?
There are four main signals that tell whether your content will be cited:
Organisation and Clarity
Artificial intelligence systems don't read your page like a human does. They look for well-defined, extractable answers. Content that has a clear question as a heading immediately followed by a direct, concise answer is far more likely to be cited than content that buries the answer in flowing prose. A good format is to begin by providing the direct answer (40–60 words) at the beginning of the relevant section and then expand with detail and evidence below that.
Content Update
Current content is highly favoured by artificial intelligence systems. In its research it found that 83% of AI citations came from pages updated in the last 12 months, and more than 60% of those had been updated in the last six months. It doesn't mean rewriting everything all the time, but it does mean keeping your key content pages up to date with the latest statistics, relevant examples and accurate information. Every month a page strong in 2024 that hasn't been touched loses citation potential.
Brand Cites and Authority Signals
Brand mentions have a correlation of 0.65 with AI visibility, while backlinks have a neutral effect, which is contrary to traditional SEO. Simply put, building links helps your Google ranking but does relatively little for your AI citation rate. What matters more is whether other credible sources mention your brand in relation to your expertise. For AEO, press mentions, podcast appearances, industry directories and partner mentions are more valuable than link building.
E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust
Google's E-E-A-T framework is almost exactly aligned with what artificial intelligence systems look for in a source. Credible author attribution, referenced evidence, named business information, consistent publishing history, and real-world proof of expertise — all of these things help your AEO position. Content from unnamed sources is cited far less often than content from known, qualified humans or organisations.
7 Practical AEO Measures UK Companies Can Implement Today
Reorganise Your Main Pages to Answer Questions
Review your most important service and blog pages. If you answer an implied question, state the actual question. Change "About our web design service" to "What does a web design service include?" (H2) and then add a direct factual answer in the first paragraph. Artificial intelligence systems are much better at extracting content that is in a structured, question format than they are at extracting the same content buried in prose.
Add Real FAQ Sections to Your Pages
Not generic fill-in-the-blank questions. Actual questions your customers ask. Discuss with your sales team, review your Google Search Console query data, check "People Also Ask" for your target keywords. 40–60 words direct answer for each question, followed by a more detailed explanation. Add a dedicated FAQ section to pages that address common questions related to your topic — but add FAQs only when users have real follow-up questions.
Add Schema Code
Schema markup is a code of structured data that communicates to artificial intelligence systems the type of content on your page. For AEO, the most important schemas are FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Organization, and Author/Person. Specifically, the FAQPage schema can markup your question-and-answer content in a way that artificial intelligence systems can read. If your website is missing schema markup on key pages, adding it is one of the highest-ROI technical changes you can make in 2026.
Be Really Current With Your Content
Create a simple content audit calendar. Update the stats, refresh the examples, and fix anything that's gone out of date on your best performing pages every six months. If you change a page, change the published or modified date as well. Artificial intelligence systems take freshness of content as a trust indicator — a page last touched in 2024 is competing at a disadvantage to a page updated in August 2026.
Your Own Unique Content for Your Business
The single biggest AEO advantage is content that has real, first-hand experience. Case studies with actual numbers. Named persons with relevant credentials giving opinions. Insights you get from doing the work, not reading what other people are saying about it. Artificial intelligence systems can now tell the difference between content that's original to the source and content that's aggregated from other places. The more your content is based on real-world experience, the more potential you have to be cited.
Gain Brand Mentions, Not Just Backlinks
Spend some of your off-site effort on activities that create mentions: contributing to industry publications, appearing on podcasts, getting listed in relevant directories and getting press. For UK businesses in particular, demonstrating GDPR compliance and transparent AI use generates the kind of trust signals that both regulators and AI platforms are looking for.
Beginning to Measure Your AI Visibility
You can't optimise what you can't measure. The traditional Google Search Console doesn't tell you how often you're cited in AI Overviews or in ChatGPT answers. Tools like Peec AI, Profound and Ahrefs Brand Radar are emerging to fill this gap. Begin simple AI visibility tracking today, no matter if the tools are perfect or not, so you have a baseline to improve against. Use custom channel groups in GA4 to track referral traffic from AI platforms.
UK AEO Benefit
The UK business sector has a real benefit from AEO that is massively under-utilised and not thought of by most.
AI platforms will be able to differentiate between regional content and locally relevant, locally written content that carries stronger trust signals for geographically specific queries. British businesses that write in British English for British audiences have a natural AEO advantage for queries focused on the UK.
If a UK user asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "what is the best web design agency in Manchester" or "how much does SEO cost in the UK" an AI system is looking for UK-specific, locally-contextualised sources to cite. If you make your inherent local knowledge visible in your content, it is a structural advantage.
That means writing specifically for a UK audience. UK spelling. Examples from the UK. UK pricing. UK regulations. UK case studies. The more clearly your content says "this is authoritative UK content written by a UK business for UK readers", the stronger your AEO position for UK-intent queries.
SEO, AEO and What Search Really Looks Like in 2026
AEO is not a magic switch. Adding FAQ schema to a thin, low-authority page isn't going to get it into AI citations overnight. Schema doesn't replace a lack of genuine expertise or poor content quality — it signals structure but the content underneath still has to earn trust through substance.
AEO does not replace SEO either. If anything, this makes your SEO foundation more important, not less. Artificial intelligence systems can be well structured but they cannot cite a page that is not indexed, not trusted or not technically sound. Technical SEO is hierarchy, content quality is hierarchy, AEO structure is hierarchy.
What AEO does, when implemented properly, is give you visibility into a channel that your competitors are probably not looking at. The overlap between traditional top 10 rankings and AI citations is only 8–12%. That means the citation landscape is largely uncharted territory — and the companies optimising their content for AI citation today will establish authority in that space while everyone else plays catch-up.
The change from search engine to answer engine is not happening. It's here already. Is your business present in both landscapes or just one?

FAQ's
Q: What is AEO?
A: AEO is Answer Engine Optimisation. It's the practice of structuring content so that AI tools — including Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and now the latest: ChatGPT Search — select your website as the source they cite when generating answers to users' questions.
Q: What is the difference between AEO & SEO?
A: SEO helps your website rank in the normal Google search results and generate clicks. AEO optimises your content to be cited by AI tools that generate direct answers – often without the user clicking through to any website. Both are needed in 2026. SEO sets the stage; AEO provides the structure and clarity artificial intelligence systems need to cite you.
Q: Is AEO the new SEO?
A: No. SEO is complemented by AEO, not replaced by it. Search engines must crawl, index and trust content for artificial intelligence systems to be able to cite it. A technically sound well-optimised website is a prerequisite for effective AEO.
Q: Which AI tools use AEO optimised content?
A: The main artificial intelligence systems pulling in from outside sources are Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity AI, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini. Clear, authoritative, structured and regularly updated AEO content tends to do well across all of them.
Q: How long does AEO take to work?
A: Improvements to AEO can start to see results within weeks for pages that are already trusted and ranked well. For newer pages or sites with weaker SEO foundations, expect 3–6 months before AI citation rates improve in a meaningful way. Structural changes like adding FAQ sections and schema markup generally have the fastest impact.
Q: Do I need schema markup for AEO?
A: Schema markup is one of the most powerful technical changes you can make for AEO, but it's not the only factor. The schema types that are most correlated are FAQPage, Article, Organization and Author. But schema is most useful when it is built on real solid well-structured content underneath. It signals structure, it does not generate it.
